Children in Latvia read books from Estonian authors

Latvian National Library recognized the work of two Estonian authors by selecting their books into their reading program The Children’s, Young Adult, and Parents’ Jury.

The Children’s, Young Adult, and Parents’ Jury (Bērnu, jauniešu un vecāku žūrija) started in the year 2001. On one side, it is a literary award, where the jury is made up by children, and on the other, it is a popular reading program with a wide scope.

The participants in five age categories read a selection of 6 children’s books selected by adult literature experts and rate these books after reading. The book selection includes books from Latvian authors as well as translated literature from all over the world. Estonian authors were represented by two books this year: Indrek Koff‘s Homeward illustrated by Marja-Liisa Plats and Juhani Püttsepp’s The Moon is Like a Golden Boat illustrated by Latvian illustrator Gundega Muzikante.

Approximately 20 000 children, young adults and grownups from Latvia and abroad participated in the program. The participants are divided into five age groups: children’s jury 5+; children’s jury 9+; young adult jury 11+; young adult jury 15+ and parents.
