On February 6, 2025, at 4 PM, the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre will open the illustration exhibition “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body”, exploring movement in all its possible forms. The exhibition will remain open until May 3, 2025.
This unique illustration exhibition showcases works by 19 illustrators who tackle the themes of movement and body awareness in a broad and diverse way. Their works examine various expressions of movement – from sports and dance to circus performances, chess, and even the movement of animals and nature. The exhibition, displayed in the centre’s staircase and illustration galleries, features both newly created pieces specifically for this exhibition, as well as, previously completed illustrations that align with the theme.
Participating illustrators include: Liis Roden, Natalia Mirzoian, Katrin Ehrlich, Kadri Ilves, Regina Lukk-Toompere, Liisi Lukk, Kadi Kurema, Liina Maadla, Kadri Roosi, Anu Kalm, Catherine Zarip, Pamela Samel, Anne Pikkov, Kaia Rähn, Viive Noor, Ulla Saar, Tiiu Kitsik, Anne Linnamägi, and Gerda Märtens.
Exhibition curator Viive Noor stated that “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body” was inspired by the desire to explore movement in its many forms beyond just activities related to sports. “Generally speaking, artists are often not the biggest sports enthusiasts. However, our exhibition demonstrates that movement is much more than just sports – it includes running, dancing, playing chess, circus performances, the movement of nature, and everything related to the human body. We aim to offer fresh perspectives on the meaning of movement, encouraging people to reflect on how movement influences both our minds as well as our daily lives,” she added.
The exhibition is free of charge and open to visitors in the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre’s staircase and illustration galleries during the centre’s regular opening hours:
Monday–Friday: 10 AM – 6 PM
Saturday: 11 AM – 4 PM
(Closed during private events.)
Visitors can also explore a collection of Olympic mascots from Liis Paabo’s private collection, displayed in the centre’s attic gallery.
