Solo exhibition Stories Written with Gouache by renowned German illustrator and artist Aljoscha Blau is opened in the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre until June 16th, 2021.
Aljoscha Blau’s illustrations are passionate, multilayered, surprising, and humorous. He prefers to use gouache as a technique and has dedicated the book Multitalent Gouache (Multitalented Gouache) to teaching this technique. His illustrations speak of never-ending creative explorations that have manifested in the change in his artistic handwriting.
According to Viive Noor, the curator of the exhibition the Estonian art lover has had an opportunity to view these explorations: “Blau’s previous exhibition in the children’s literature centre featured works with a different style. His pictures were more in the vein of the classical school of Russian illustration. Illustrations that we can see today appear more like sketches that speak of the high skills of the author. His unique and vigorous illustrations are simply magical.”
Aljoscha Blau was born in 1972 in Saint Petersburg and grew up in a family of artists. He spent his summers in Narva-Jõesuu, Estonia. Blau moved to Germany in 1990 where he still lives and works today. He studied graphic art and illustration in the Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften in Hamburg. He has illustrated more than 60 books for children and adults and also teaches art. Blau has received multiple nominations and awards for his work including the Troisdorfer Bilderbuchpreis, Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis, and BolognaRagazzi Award.
He has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Germany, Austria, Spain, Croatia, Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, France, Serbia, Slovakia, Denmark, USA, New-Zealand, Russia etc.
