On July 1 at 4 PM, the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre will open the international illustration exhibition Sea Change, showcasing nearly 200 unique artist postcards from around the world. The exhibition will be on view from July 1 to September 6, 2025.
The exhibition is part of a global project led by the International Centre for the Picture Book in Society, based at the University of Worcester, and is curated by illustrator and lecturer Tobias Hickey.
Sea Change brings attention to the alarming state of the world’s oceans and ecosystems. Artists from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Oceania, and North and South America have contributed original illustrated postcards that express their concerns, hopes, and visions regarding the threats faced by our oceans and natural environments.
The exhibition aligns with the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration—an initiative calling for the protection and revival of ecosystems across the globe—and supports Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. Among the many notable contributors are well-known book illustrators such as Axel Scheffler (illustrator of The Gruffalo), Jackie Morris, Roger Mello, and Nicola Davies. Estonia is represented by illustrators Viive Noor, Ulla Saar, and Catherine Zarip.
One of the postcards was created by Peter Thomson, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, who emphasizes the importance of the exhibition in raising ocean awareness—a key issue for ensuring a sustainable future and a thriving planet.
Before arriving in Estonia, the exhibition travelled to Nami Island in South Korea, Worcester in the United Kingdom, and the UNESCO-supported Biennial of Illustration Bratislava.
Sea Change highlights a creative and international approach to environmental issues and invites visitors to reflect on how our individual actions shape the future.
