The nominees for the 2025 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award were announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair last week. Representing Estonia, the candidates for this prestigious award are author Andrus Kivirähk, illustrator Marja-Liisa Plats, and author-illustrator Piret Raud.
This year, the highly esteemed international children’s and youth literature award has a total of 265 nominees from 72 countries and regions, with 81 of them being first-time nominees. The list includes authors, illustrators, storytellers, and reading promoters.
More than 100 organizations worldwide, including the Estonian Writers’ Union and the Estonian section of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People), submitted candidates for the award.
The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, one of the world’s most significant recognitions in children’s and youth literature, was established by the Swedish government in 2002 to ensure that all children have access to good stories. The award is granted either for a lifetime contribution or for a significant effort to promote reading culture among young people. The laureate will be announced on April 1, 2025.
