Finnish Illustrators’ Christmas Exhibition “Christmas Magic”

From December 3, 2024, the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre’s illustration gallery will host an exhibition of Christmas and winter-themed artworks by Finnish illustrators, titled Christmas Magic. The exhibition will remain open until February 2, 2025.

According to the exhibition’s curator, Viive Noor, exhibitions featuring artists from different countries aim to offer a glimpse into the tastes and perspectives currently prevailing in those nations. “Of course, a small exhibition with only a few dozen frames cannot be exhaustive, but it still provides a brief overview,” she explains. Noor notes that Finnish illustrators tend to have a more poster-like and decorative style compared to the works showcased in last year’s Latvian illustrators’ exhibition at the centre. “But this exhibition is filled with brightness and light. There is plenty of snow, opportunities to ski and sled. A certain Nordic crispness and bold contrasting colors distinguish the Finnish exhibition from the warm and intimate showcase by our Latvian neighbors. Both are dear to us, yet so different. We find ourselves somewhere in between and, hopefully, we will all enjoy this new exhibition, which brings us the beauty of a Nordic winter and Christmas charm,” said Noor.

The exhibition, created in collaboration with the Finnish Illustrators Association (Kuvittajat), features works by 18 illustrators: Milja Ahonen, Sari Airola, Terhi Ekebom, Filippa Hella, Nina Huisman, Jonna Jylhä, Suvi Kari, Noora Ketolainen, Jutta Kivilompolo, Kiira Koivunen, Milja Laine, Minna Lehväslaiho, Päivi Marin, Marjo Nygård, Kati Närhi, Karoliina Pertamo, Sanna Hellikki Suova, and Henna Tyrväinen.

The exhibition is curated by Viive Noor (ELC) and Veera Jalava (Kuvittajat ry).

Additionally, the centre’s attic gallery features an exhibition by the Puppet Theatre Museum.

Both exhibitions can be visited during the centre’s opening hours: Mon–Fri 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Sat 11 a.m.–4 p.m., except when events are held in the hall.
