Marja-Liisa Plats’ works were selected for the final of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustration Exhibition

Estonian illustrator Marja-Liisa Plats reached to the competion final round of Bologna International Children’s Book Fair 58th Illustration Exhibition.

A total of 3520 works from 81 countries or regions around the world were submitted to the competition. The jury selected 346 finalists for the final round, including one Estonian illustrator. The final list of participating artists at the exhibition will be revealed by the end of January 2024.

Marja-Liisa Plats submitted illustrations for the book “Maa, mille nimi on Hampampamm” (2023, published by Koolibri) by Ville Hytönen. The book tells the story of a land named Hampampamm, where a colorful group of beings resides. Residents include Puutobik, Mutipoeg Marakratt, tiny woodland companions, a fairy named Hiisike, and the monstrous Kleebo hiding in the caves behind salt holes.

The Bologna International Children’s Book Fair Illustration Exhibition first took place in 1967. The exhibition showcases the latest trends in the world of children’s book illustration, featuring the works of both experienced book artists and emerging talents. Last year, Pamela Samel’s illustrations for the book “Toru” were selected for the Bologna Fair’s illustration exhibition, and in 2022, Marja-Liisa Plats represented Estonia with her works for Triinu Laane’s book “Luukere Juhani juhtumised.”

The Children’s Book Fair will take place in Italy from April 8 to 11, 2024.
